Ice Caves of the World: A Guide to the Frozen Underground

Ice caves occupy an unusual position in the world of underground exploration: they are spectacularly photogenic, accessible enough that non-cavers visit them in large numbers, and simultaneously among the most seasonally constrained and rapidly changing cave environments on earth. A crystal chamber that exists in January may be unrecognisable by April as glacial dynamics shift ice formations formed over decades or centuries. Understanding the distinction between the different types of ice cave — and the specific access constraints each imposes — is essential before planning a visit.

There are two fundamentally different cave types that the term "ice cave" covers. True ice caves are rock cavities, usually limestone karst, in which the temperature and airflow geometry cause ice to accumulate and persist through the summer. Glacial ice caves are passages within or beneath glacial ice, formed by meltwater and constantly changing as the glacier moves. Both are genuine cave experiences, but the physics and the access considerations are entirely different.

Eisriesenwelt, Austria

Eisriesenwelt — World of the Ice Giants — near Werfen in the Salzburg Alps is the largest ice cave in the world accessible to visitors and one of the most visited cave attractions in the Alps. The cave system extends 42 kilometres, though the ice formations are concentrated in the first kilometre from the entrance, where cold winter air sinks into the cave and freezes meltwater percolating from the limestone above. The ice formations — columns, curtains, terraced cascades — reach up to 30 metres in height. The cave was explored systematically from 1879, first by Anton Posselt-Czorich, and opened as a show cave in 1920. Visitors reach the entrance via a cable car from Werfen valley and walk guided routes through the illuminated ice chambers. The cave is open from May to October; outside this window the entrance road and cable car are closed. The ice zone is a static feature of the cave's cold-trap geometry and has been stable over the recorded period of observation, though long-term climate change is monitored.

Vatnajokull glacier ice caves, Iceland

The crystal ice caves beneath and within the Vatnajokull ice cap in southeast Iceland are the most photographed ice cave environments in the world. Unlike Eisriesenwelt, these are glacial caves: passages formed in basalt beneath the glacier by geothermal heat and meltwater, their walls and ceilings formed from compressed glacial ice that appears vivid blue due to the absorption of long-wavelength light. Access is via boat across the glacial lagoon at Jokulsarlon and then a guided walk across the glacier margin, or via the Skaftafell Nature Reserve on the glacier's southern edge. The caves are accessible only between October and March, when temperatures are consistently below freezing and the risk of ice collapse is lowest. Summer access is not offered because the caves actively melt and restructure during the warm months. Each winter season presents a different set of accessible chambers.

Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska

The Mendenhall Glacier outside Juneau in southeast Alaska has become one of North America's most accessible glacier ice cave destinations. The caves are formed by meltwater running beneath the glacier's terminal zone; the walls are blue-green compressed glacial ice with a clarity that allows light to penetrate deeply. Access requires a kayak crossing of Mendenhall Lake followed by a scramble onto the glacier — guided tours operate from Juneau from late summer into autumn when water levels allow passage. The glacier is retreating significantly: it lost more than 3 kilometres of length between 1958 and 2020, and the cave formations shift accordingly from season to season. Some chambers accessible in previous years have become inaccessible as the terminal ice zone changes.

Kungur Ice Cave, Russia

Kungur in the Perm region of the Ural Mountains is the most visited cave in Russia and one of the largest gypsum caves in the world. The cave extends 5.7 kilometres, with 48 grottoes, 70 lakes, and ice formations that include stalactites, stalagmites, and columns of ice persisting through the summer in the cold-air-trap zones near the entrance. Kungur has been open to guided tours since 1914, making it one of the longest-operating cave show sites in the world. The ice grottoes are visited year-round; the formations are most extensive in winter and early spring but remain partially present in summer.

Dobsinska Ice Cave, Slovakia

Dobsinska Ladova Jaskyna in the Slovak Ore Mountains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (listed as part of the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst designation) and contains one of the largest volumes of cave ice in Central Europe, estimated at approximately 110,000 cubic metres. The cave's three main sections hold ice floors, ice columns, and ice stalagmites up to 26 metres in height. The temperature in the ice section remains below -3.8°C year-round. Open from May to September with guided tours; the cave is closed in winter because the extreme cold makes visitor safety management difficult rather than because the ice is absent.

Mutnovsky volcanic ice cave, Kamchatka, Russia

On the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Mutnovsky volcano contains a cave system formed where volcanic heat and fumarolic gases from the active crater melt channels through the permanent glacial ice cap covering the volcano's summit. The result is a dramatic intersection of volcanic and glacial environments: steam jets emerge from the cave floor, ice walls display vivid colouration from mineral deposition, and the ceiling is formed from glacier ice thinning above active fumaroles. Access requires a multi-day expedition from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and is only practical in summer, when the road south from the city is passable.

Skaftafell crystal ice caves, Iceland

The Skaftafell area at the southern edge of the Vatnajokull ice cap hosts guided winter glacier walks that include access to smaller, more intimate crystal ice chambers than the main Jokulsarlon lagoon caves. These caves are typically reached within an hour of the Skaftafell visitor centre. The same winter-only rule applies: tours operate between November and March, guided by companies operating under the Vatnajokull National Park permit system.

Planning for seasonal access

The common thread across all true ice cave and glacial cave visits is rigid seasonality. Glacial caves specifically require cold air temperatures consistently below 0°C, stable ice ceiling conditions assessed by guides before each entry, restricted group sizes to enable rapid exit, and cleated microspike footwear or crampons over waterproof boots.

For karst ice caves like Eisriesenwelt and Dobsinska, summer access is possible but winter provides the most extensive ice. Eisriesenwelt's season runs from May to October; outside this window the cable car and road are closed and the ice is at its most extensive — a counterintuitive schedule driven by visitor safety rather than formation state. Dobsinska is open only in the warmer months for the same reason. Kungur, by contrast, is open year-round with the ice varying seasonally.

The future of ice caves

Most glacial ice caves are changing rapidly. The Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska has retreated more than 3 kilometres since 1958; the crystal ice caves of Vatnajokull are a different configuration each winter as the glacier dynamics shift. Scientists who study these environments treat each season's cave as a unique object, distinct from the previous year's formation. For visitors, this impermanence is part of what makes glacial ice caves compelling: the chamber you enter has never been visited before in exactly that form and will never be visited again in exactly that form.
