Biospeleology — the study of cave-dwelling life — finds its richest sites in caves with long isolation, stable temperatures, and nutrient input from outside (bat guano, organic-rich water). The species below are flagship cave fauna.
Postojna Cave, Slovenia
The flagship olm (Proteus anguinus) cave, visible in viewing tanks at the visitor centre and in the cave's natural waters.

Endemic cave shrimp, troglobitic beetles, and the same olm species as Postojna. UNESCO designation includes biological values.
Krubera-Veryovkina, Georgia
Some of the world's deepest cave-adapted fauna live at -2,000 m, including blind springtails. Research access only.

Cave fauna terms
Troglobite: cave-only species (blind, depigmented). Troglophile: lives in caves but also outside. Trogloxene: enters caves but cannot complete its life cycle there.
Why caves matter for conservation
Cave ecosystems are slow to recover from disturbance. White-nose syndrome has decimated North American bat populations; cave microbe sampling has revealed novel antibiotics.
