Top 10 Caves in Malaysia
Malaysia's caves are concentrated in two zones: the Mulu karst of Sarawak, home to Deer Cave, Sarawak Chamber, and Clearwater Cave, and the limestone hills of the Malay peninsula, where Batu Caves and Gua Tempurung dominate.
1. Deer Cave, Gunung Mulu
Karst cave, UNESCO. The world's second-largest cave passage (largest until Son Doong) — 174 m wide and 122 m high. The evening bat exodus is one of the great wildlife spectacles in Asia. Tour grade B.
2. Sarawak Chamber, Gunung Mulu
Karst cave. The largest single cave chamber by area in the world (700 x 400 x 70 m). Advanced caving access only. Tour grade D.
3. Clearwater Cave, Gunung Mulu
Karst cave. The longest cave in Southeast Asia at 227 km surveyed. Tour section by river boat and walkway. Tour grade B.
4. Wind Cave, Gunung Mulu
Karst cave, UNESCO. Connected to Clearwater — known for the King's Chamber and its distinctive air movement. Tour grade B.
5. Lang Cave, Gunung Mulu
Karst cave, UNESCO. The most decorated of the Mulu show caves, with stalactites and helictites. Tour grade A.
6. Batu Caves, Selangor
Karst cave. Hindu pilgrimage site outside Kuala Lumpur, with the iconic gilded Murugan statue and 272 steps to the main cave. Tour grade A.
7. Gua Tempurung, Perak
Karst cave. The longest show cave on the Malay peninsula — five great chambers, river crossings on the advanced tour. Tour grade B.
8. Niah Caves, Sarawak
Karst cave. Major archaeological site — the "Niah Skull" is one of the oldest modern human fossils in Southeast Asia. Boardwalk tour. Tour grade A.
9. Gua Kelam, Perlis
Karst cave. A 370-m walkway through a tin-mining tunnel-cave on the Thai-Malaysian border. Tour grade A.
10. Gomantong Caves, Sabah
Karst cave. Famous for swiftlet nests harvested for bird's-nest soup and for its huge bat population. Tour grade B.
Planning a Malaysia cave trip
Mulu is accessed by flight from Miri; allow 3-4 days for the show caves and Deer Cave bat exit. Batu Caves is a half-day from Kuala Lumpur. Gua Tempurung pairs with Ipoh for a Perak weekend.
