A portion of the cave has served as a maternity roost for cave myotis bats, a species that gathers there seasonally to give birth and raise young in the stable temperature and humidity underground. Because disturbance during the maternity season can cause bats to abandon roosts or drop young, park managers restrict or close certain sections of the cave to tours during the relevant months each year. This dual role, as both a mineral showcase and a wildlife nursery, shapes how and when different parts of the cave are open to visitors.
