Eisriesenwelt Deep Dive
Eisriesenwelt — "World of the Ice Giants" — near Werfen in Austria is the largest ice cave on Earth. The 42-km karst cave system has its first kilometre permanently filled with massive ice formations created by cold-air-trap dynamics.
How the ice forms
Eisriesenwelt is a "static" ice cave — winter cold air sinks into the cave through its lower entrance, displaces warm air out through upper entrances, and creates a permanent cold reservoir below freezing. Meltwater from above freezes on contact with the chilled limestone, building ice walls, columns and floors that have been accumulating for thousands of years.
The visitor route
Tours visit the first 1 km of the cave system, where the ice formations are concentrated. Highlights include the Posselt Hall (named after the cave's first explorer), the Eispalast (Ice Palace) ice chamber, and the Frigga Veil — a 25-m ice curtain. Carbide lamps illuminate the formations dramatically; the cave has no electric lighting.
Discovery
Anton von Posselt-Czorich descended the cave in 1879 and produced the first survey. Tourism began in 1920. The cable car was built in 1955, reducing the approach hike substantially.
Reaching the cave
The cave is high above the village of Werfen — a 20-minute drive from the village to the lower cable-car station, a 3-minute cable- car ride, then a 20-minute hike to the cave entrance. Total approach time is approximately 1 hour each way.
When to visit
Open May-October only; tour times depend on weather and cable-car operation. The cave maintains -1 to +2°C all year; visitors must wear warm layers.
Practical
Carbide lamps provided. No photography permitted inside (lamps generate too much heat for sustained exposures). Cave temperature near freezing year-round.
